SAN JOSE, CA. - June 20, 2006 Press Release – Heart of Chaos (HOC),
an artisan collective for emerging artists, began a weekly art class at
San Jose’s Juvenile Hall in April, 2006 with the permission and
support of the Probation Department Community Release Program’s
supervisor Jay Hill and Lance Navas. HOC directors and emerging visual
artists Anabella Pinon and Miguel Machuca visit B10 ward each week with
a two-hour lesson that engages the young men and allows them to express
themselves with paint, pastels, pencil and ink. The lessons include experience
with a powerful art therapy technique called touch drawing as well as
traditional techniques in still life, portrait and abstract expressionism.
Last year guest calligraphy artists Pan van Dyck and Kay Woolfolk from
the Bay Area Pacific Scribes taught black lettering and calligraphic techniques
to the young men. See photos
of the work. This year Rubin Reyes of Mother Earth Clay is teaching the
young men how to fashion bowls and other items out of clay. (See
