Juvenile Hall Garden Program Underway
Young men from B7 ward and volunteers from
Catalyst for Youth are clearing a large section of land for the garden
measuring 98 feet long by 12 feet wide. As you can see from the pictures
below the plot has been taken over by crabgrass! The young men have risen
to the occasion and are enthusiastically clearing the land. Erik Plato,
a landscape architect is teaching the boys how to read a terrain map and
design the garden accordingly.
Volunteer Russell Waite, a retired software
engineer and a musician for the Mid-Pennisula Symphony is also an avid
gardener and he brought bags and bags of soil conditioner and his rotatiller
to help prepare the soil. New volunteer and garden enthusiast Andrew Ridley
joined the Wednesday crew on April 25th and is looking forward to being
a regular in the program.

New shovels donated by Willow
Glen Baptist Church
were appreciated by the young men.

The crab grass and heavy
clay soil is finally yielding to the youth's
determination to clear the plot and prepare it for plants.

Teamwork and cooperation
between youth is an important
benefit! The young men shaking hands suggested that I take this picture.
