Juvenile Hall Garden Program as of May 12th
Young men from B7 ward and volunteers from
non profit Catalyst for Youth have cleared a large section of land for
the initial garden measuring 98 feet long by 12 feet wide. We are now
digging trenches and laying out an irrigation system. Volunteer Russell
Waite is teaching the boys how to put the pipes together (see pics below).
The Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County
are intrigued with our project and MG Jonica has been collecting plants
for it. They are being tended lovingly outside the jail as the garden
soil is being prepared. As you can see from the pictures below, the garden
has benefited from the energy of many young men who are digging up the
clay soil, removing crab grass and installing the irrigation system.

The young men work steadily
to prepare the soil for planting and have almost completed digging the
trenches to lay the irrigation pipes. Teamwork and coorperation are not
uncommon because the young men appreciate being outside in the sun.
